How to Decorate a Recessed Niche

Many home builders in our area are adding recessed niches in living rooms, entry ways and dining rooms. The niches add depth and architectural intrigue to rooms, but they can be a challenge to decorate. Don’t be intimidated! You can decorate your niche to add a unique punch of style to your home.

My #1 piece of advice for you as you start playing with options is to opt for simplicity. Overdone, a niche can look tacky and messy.  There are many options, but here are directions for one of my favorites.

Start by painting the back wall of the niche a different color than your walls. Select a color that coordinates with your décor. This will define the area and add depth to the space.

Hang a painting, framed mirror, or other work of art. Select one piece that fills most of the wall, but still leaves space showing the painted backdrop.  The recess creates a natural frame around the object, so choose a piece that does not fill it all the way up.

If the bottom ledge of the niche is deep enough, choose a grouping of 3 decorative elements in tiered sizes,         allowing just enough space around them so it doesn’t look either too crowded or too small for the space. Place the tallest item in the right or left hand corner and then position the other 2 to create a staggered trio.

If your niche is large enough, select one more item to place in the opposite corner to create a look that is visually pulled together. Consider something with a different texture and shape, such as wire, metal or a uniquely shaped woven basket.

Stand back and check out your design. Play with it until it works and then enjoy your stylin’ good work!
